Sayner-Star Lake is known as the “Birthplace of the Snowmobile”–Carl Eliason built his first “motor toboggan” here in 1924 (it’s still on display at the Vilas County Historical Museum in Sayner), and the Sayner-Star Lake Barnstormers were the original creators of Vilas County’s snowmobile trail system. Today, the Sayner-Star Lake Barnstormers maintain nearly 80 miles of trails in central Vilas County, including part of Wisconsin’s oldest snowmobile trail. Sayner-Star Lake’s trails run through the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest and connect to trails in Boulder Junction, Arbor Vitae, Conover, Eagle River, and St. Germain.
