Snowmobile trails in Wisconsin don’t close after dark but snowmobilers who choose to ride at night should take extra caution. Here are a few safety tips to follow on your next nighttime ride:
- At night, snowmobilers must travel in the same direction as vehicle traffic in the nearest lane unless they are on an officially marked and designated trail.
- Don’t override your headlights: Keep your speed under 40 miles per hour so you have time to react to what’s ahead of you, such as trail markers or hazards.
- Avoid lakes—it is very difficult to gauge ice conditions after dark.
- Only ride on marked trails.
- Always wear your helmet and safety gear.
- Don’t drink and ride.
